When the world’s most successful 3D director met one of pop’s most detail-focused performers, the collaboration was not immediate. Billie Eilish and James Cameron are set to release their joint project, HIT ME HARD AND SOFT: THE TOUR (LIVE IN 3D), on May 8, but the idea initially faced resistance.
Cameron explained that when he proposed placing large 3D camera rigs on stage, Eilish declined. By the time she reached her Manchester residency in July 2025, she had already completed nearly 80 shows and was focused on maintaining the live experience for fans. Over the following six months, discussions continued until Cameron demonstrated that the cameras could blend into the performance rather than disrupt it.
The final film, co-directed by both, highlights the technical side of the production while keeping the live atmosphere intact. Eilish said she was treated as a full creative partner during the process. The release follows a tour that spanned around 100 shows, with the film offering a closer look at the stage setup and performance when it arrives in theaters.
